Are Indian whey protein good?
To understand, are Indian whey protein good, we first need to understand a customer’s perspective as; What to Look for when buying Whey Protein. As we are Indians I am sure the most important deriving factor is the price to value, haha. Apart from this, Quality, Purity, Protein Content, Amino Acid Profile, Processing Method, and Ingredients.
Protein buying guide: What to Look for when buying Whey Protein
1) Price
As usual, we always look for price to value whenever we buy something whether it is a diet on a budget or a superfood in India. For us, it is always the price to the value factor. In this factor, Yes Indian brands are better than International because any International brand of Whey protein of 1 Kg starts above 3oooRs and typically a good Indian brand’s whey protein starts above 1500Rs.
2) Quality
Well, on this we have no upper hand over international brands because unfortunately as of now India doesn’t have many whey protein manufacturing plants, and 99% of the whey protein usually gets imported from out of India. Which as of now costs around 1200Rs per Kg + GST.
Note: That’s why it is important to understand if you are getting a whey protein under 1400Rs there is a really good chance that it is not something healthy.
3) Purity
This completely depends from brand to brand. I have personally used some Indian brands’ whey protein where the quality is mindblowing at a very decent price and some which are a menace to our society. So, we will cover this topic further below when we come to, ‘Best Indian protein powder brands.
4) Protein Content
This is obviously the most important thing to notice whether we are talking about, are Indian whey protein good or even in the case of International Whey protein brands.
This again depends on the brand to brand. However, we already know that most of the whey protein concentrate or raw whey is getting imported into India as of now.
100gm of whey protein concentrated typically contains 70-80% protein, with the remaining 20-30% made up of carbohydrates, fat, and other nutrients.
As Isolated is a purer form and hydrolyzed is just the breakdown of protein in a more refined form which makes it easier to digest than the other two. So, protein content completely depends on how a brand processed the raw form.
5) Amino Acid Profile
Whey is considered a complete protein, which means it contains all the essential amino acids that our bodies need. So, It is very much essential that Indian brands should need to have a complete essential amino acid profile, and fortunately, Indian brands do offer it mostly, apart from a few.
6) Processing Method
A lot of people who understand how many types of whey protein processing methods are there and which are good and which are bad surely check out which processing method is used to process which product.
Now, you will ask ‘Why filtration method is important when choosing a whey protein?‘
Whey protein has other benefits as well apart from just muscle-building and recovery. Some of the sub-factors include anti-cancer property and anti-viral properties, and they also boost the overall immunity of our body.
It is essential to check this when it comes to, what to look for when buying whey protein’ because natural filtration methods keep the nutrition or other sub-factors within whey protein, and in chemical methods, some of the prominent whey protein nutrition get reduced or lost.
Types of filtration method of whey protein
1) Ultrafiltration whey protein:
This is the conventional method that is generally used to filter Whey protein concentrate. It is a natural method. This method keeps the other essential benefits of whey protein.
2) Ion exchange whey protein:
This is the chemical method that can be used to process the raw/concentrated whey protein to isolate whey protein. In this method, brands use two chemicals, hydrochloric acid, and sodium hydroxide which impact the sub-factors of whey protein.
Which filtration method is best for whey protein?
Ultrafiltration method or natural filtration method is for whey protein because it keeps the other properties of whey protein apart from just muscle building, anti-cancer, anti-viral, and anti-microbial, and whey protein also boosts overall body immunity.

Himalaya is one of the most reputed Indian brands. It is founded in 1930 and since then it has provided multiple natural products. Nutrabox is another Indian brand that I have personally used and found the results to be pretty satisfactory. It is a USA Labdor-certified brand for clean labels. Protein accuracy is good, and so are the other parameters. However, it is a bit on the expensive side compared to other brands.
